THE WHO Guitarist Trashes KURT COBAIN's Diaries In British Newspaper
November 21, 2002The Nov. 3 edition of London newspaper The Observer included a provocative review of "Journals", the new book of the late NIRVANA singer Kurt Cobain's drawings and diaries, written by THE WHO guitarist Pete Townshend. In the review, Townshend responds to Cobain's remark "I hope I die before I become Pete Townshend," from a journal entry published in the book, which Townshend calls "the scribblings of a crazed and depressed drug addict in the midst of what those of us who have been through drug rehab describe as 'stinking thinking.' " THE WHO guitarist, who was a book editor in the U.K. in the Eighties, trashes "Journals" for being poorly organized, and suggests that the journals ought not to have been published at all. On his web site (www.petetownshend.co.uk),where an unedited version of the review is posted, Townshend minces fewer words, calling "Journals" "a despicable exercise in sensationalist rock necrophilia."
